About Dr. Clive

Hi, I am Dr. Clive Wilder-Smith

Got Guts? This relates to several areas of my professional expertise and passion. Let me briefly introduce myself.

Dr. Clive the medical doctor

I am a clinical gastroenterologist and have the privilege of treating patients with all types of gastrointestinal disorders. And yes, I am passionate about the health benefits of foods, as well as their intolerances. I care about your gut feeling.®

Your goals and mine are similar. State-of-the-art and individualised treatment, efficient and friendly. I offer these services in my practice, supported by dedicated and caring staff.

Clinical expertise

In addition to routine gastroenterological examinations and cancer screening, I specialise in the following areas:

  • Effects of food (nutrition): Food intolerances and health-promoting effects of food.

  • Functional gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, irritable stomach syndrome and related syndromes (disorders of gut-brain interaction, DGBI).

  • Pelvic floor disorders such as incontinence, constipation and pelvic pain syndromes.

  • Oesophageal diseases such as reflux, swallowing disorders, dental erosions, voice disorders and chronic cough.

Eating should be a pleasant experience and healthy. Unfortunately, many people react negatively to food. On the other hand, food contains many nutrients with highly beneficial effects. Both aspects are particularly important for my practice, consultancy and start-ups.

I have set up a comprehensive online platform to help people with adverse reactions to food at  www.foodintolerances.org. The identification of food intolerances is an important aspect in the treatment of pain, irritable bowel syndrome, changes in bowel habits, flatulence and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Dr. Clive the researcher

I sit at the throbbing hub of the body - the organ system integrating the dynamic exchange that takes place along the brain-gut-microbiome axis. My expertise lies in translational studies, in bridging the gap between basic research and clinical treatment.

The buzz, the connection, the centre

My vibrant research focus encompasses neurogastroenterology, psychoneuroimmunology, nutrition, the microbiome and the dynamic interaction with all body systems. It is an interdisciplinary field of research that affects brain and nerve function, psychiatry, ageing, skin, musculoskeletal and cardiac function, pain, immunity and much more.

It is a key research area for common diseases that are often labelled as functional (such as irritable bowel syndrome or disorders of brain-but interaction), or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), food intolerances and inflammatory bowel disease.

Brain-Gut Research Group - BGRG

At BGRG, we conduct translational research. We translate ideas from basic research into solutions that help individuals. Take a look at some of the publications we've written between clinical practice, research investigations, start-up business and a full life.

Dr. Clive the consultant

Translational research, clinical practice and business experience provide a unique basis for solutions and innovations.

Researching disease mechanisms in the context of daily clinical practice is key to developing innovative healthcare solutions. For me, translational medicine includes concept development with innovators in new or unrelated fields, as well as concept realisation in start-ups or with commercial partners. Consultancy is a way to effectively translate knowledge and experience.
